Haben is a wonderful book, which takes you into the world of a woman who has been working towards an inclusive society since she was a young girl and went to Mali to help build a school. The storytelling is so vivid it made me feel like I was right there with her. And it made it very hard to put the book down, when it was time to sleep... The book also really drives home the importance of inclusion and accessibility in society. It shows that a person with disabilities can do anything they set their mind to as long as society doesn’t hold them back by denying equal access to services. I personally wouldn’t have thought that a deaf blind person could surf or climb icebergs, until I read this book. Another reason i found this book very interesting was learning how Haben does all these things.
Haben Girma is a brilliant and compassionate woman with enormous courage and a kick-ass sense of humor! Her memoir reflects all of that and is a total delight to read. I got to know Haben in 2004, during BuildOn's Trek for Knowledge to Mali for which I was one of two teacher chaperones. Day after day, she continued to amaze and amuse me, as she worked tirelessly to help build a school for the children of Kegne Village and found humor in things that might have reduced a less resilient person to tears. As someone who became disabled 14 years ago at age 60, I also find Haben's book deeply and concretely encouraging. All I can ultimately say is "No matter who you are, READ THIS BOOK!"
I don't want to spoil it, but I'd wholeheartedly agree with one of Haben's core messages in her memoir: folks with disabilities are a vast untapped resource in our world, and we as an entire society are doing ourselves a disservice when we ignore our ableism. I'm looking forward to being a part of the change we all need!
I had the privilege of hearing Haben speak earlier this year, and pre-ordered this book. It has exceeded expectations, and I will be a lifelong champion of her cause! Amazing work, Haben!
Haben’s warm and witty journey takes the reader from a small child to her Harvard graduation, and on to the White House to meet President Obama. It also shows the reader the places she goes—be it a glacier, surfing or helping a sighted friend get home. Her memoir is poignant and funny, and you will laugh and cry. Haben is a delight to read by a talented author who has a serious message but doesn’t take herself seriously.
Haben is a vivacious young woman deafblind woman who has already had an amazing impact on the world, demonstrating that a deafblind person can be adventurous, funny, studious, and demanding—both of herself and others. She is an example of someone who has both benefitted from and contributes to the evolution of the disability rights movement and a self-acknowledged proud member of disability culture. On top of all that she’s a fabulous writer, who has a way of getting her point across with clarity and humor.
